The true story

Paper manufacturing in harmony with nature

Lessebo Bruk ranks among the most climate-friendly manufacturers in the paper industry when it comes to carbon emissions. Many factors contribute to our excellent results. Our approach to environmental issues involves more than production: we also add harvesting and distribution to the equation. We only use trees from Swedish forests. This makes our products carbon neutral – or even carbon negative.

Exploding a few environmental myths

“Using paper is not environmentally friendly”

Trees and wood products lock up carbon. Therefore, the use of wood products and paper can actually help to counteract the greenhouse effect. Forests that are responsibly managed with replanting fix more carbon than unmanaged forests. Your choice of paper makes a big difference when it comes to environmental impact. The products from Lessebo Bruk have one of the lowest carbon footprints in the industry.

“The disappearance of forests is due to paper production”

That’s hardly the case in Sweden. The forests of Sweden are actually expanding. The net growth of the forest is 22 per cent per year.

“Old wood absorbs carbon dioxide better”

Actually, it’s the other way round. Young trees are much more efficient at fixing carbon dioxide, while old trees start to emit greenhouse gases as they degrade. Therefore, regeneration of forests is preferable for environmental and other reasons.

“The FSC® label guarantees a greener choice”

This is by no means certain. The label ensures sustainable forestry, but doesn’t factor in the location of production and the issue of transportation around the globe. Since logistics is a key factor for green success, we keep transport to a minimum by using locally produced wood – which is, of course, certified to both FSC and PEFC standards.

“Paper mills are environmental villains”

In the case of Lessebo Bruk this is not true at all. Lessebo Bruk was a pioneer in chlorine-free paper production. Early on, we also built a biological waste-water treatment plant, which has now been modified to meet the European Union’s IPPC Directive by using the best technology possible.

Lessebo Bruk is at the front line when it comes to improving environmental performance. We are currently focusing strongly on the next step in water purification and water savings in production.

The heating of the mill is obtained from bioenergy, which makes it carbon neutral. From the waste heat, Lessebo Bruk supplies approximately 1,500 homes in the region with district heating. This represents a saving of about 8,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, compared to households heated with oil.
